1. Is your main concern with professional players toward performance optimization or injury prevention?
- "A good plan influences both. My primary training focus is on making sure the athletes have optimal joint stability, pillar strength between the shoulders and hips, good mobility where it matters most, and the tissue strength to withstand the stress demands of the sport. Doing this will help athletes tap into their full potential while lowering their risk of injury."
2. Do you have previous experience coaching top level athletes? - "I was the Strength Coach Intern for the Anaheim Ducks during my senior year of college at Cal State Fullerton, where I received with a B.S. in Kinesiology with a focus on Strength and Conditioning. I have numerous mentors that work in the highest levels of professional sport that have influenced me greatly in my work with disc golf athletes. I started DGS in 2016 and have been working with many top level players since."
3. What’s the most common injury/pain you see in disc golfers? and the best way to prevent it? - "The most common injury is the overuse injury. It can show up in many areas of the body. The best thing about disc golf is we can play everyday, and the worst thing about disc golf (health wise) is that we can play everyday. Focusing on a specific injury would be the elbow. The valgus stress on the joint, combined with low tissue strength and high volume/intensity makes it a common site for injury. Strengthen the tissues, do some soft tissue work, and watch your throw count."
4. Is there misconceptions around strength and conditioning for disc golf that you come across? - "A common misconception is that anything will work. While most all exercise is good for your health and overall fitness, training for sport should be intentional and purposeful. We don’t want to add strength and performance on top of movement dysfunction, which is what I see often with exercise routines. Another one is that you should always warm-up. The top athletes of any sport all warm-up. It’s part of their culture and routine because it makes an impact."
5. Is there any resources or recommendations you have for players at the recreational level? - "We have a free pre-round warm-up e-book that can be downloaded at www.DiscGolfStrong.com If you can only start doing one thing, do the pre-round warm-up before throwing.
